WHAT IS THE RANGE RIDER PROGRAM Local government professionals serve as Range Riders for the International City/County Management Association and their state leagues or state city management associations. They are available as resources for local government managers in their state or area. Range Riders meet periodically with managers to discuss the profession or individual concerns. Discussions run from topics such as council relations, career changes, staff reorganization, local politics, and ethical questions. Contacts are on a confidential basis. Range Riders are friends, colleagues, and counselors to the profession---not consultants. THE PROFESSIONALS Range Riders are generally retired local government managers with long experience and great respect in the profession. The Range Rider is not a Circuit Rider. Circuit riders, or shared administrators, are local government professionals who serve more than one community. They provide technical assistance and often provide overall management assistance. HOW IT WORKS The state associations and ICMA make the Range Rider service available to all local government management association members in an area served by the Range Rider. Usually, the Range Riders are contacted directly by managers or are referred by colleagues, although occasionally the Range Rider will contact members directly. In each case, Range Riders are selected jointly and are sponsored by the state association and ICMA. Range Riders receive reimbursement for expenses only.
No honorarium or salary is paid. RANGE RIDERS FOR THE SLACMA AREA The Missouri Range Rider is: James Arnold of Bridgeton Missouri at 314-991-1628 The Illinois Range Riders are: David S. Anderson of Normal, Illinois at 309-454-2389 |
